Turin advice request

My GF and I are thinking of spending ~3 days in Turin late September. Any advice on the best area of the city to base ourselves and must see attractions would be greatly appreciated.

I agree with Laura about the two museums: top notch. The Cinema Museum, though, was sort of meh.

We also enjoyed going to La Venaria Reale, a Savoy Palace with a magnificent estate and interesting history. Almost as amazing as Versailles, but crowds are light. The Basilica of Superga is supposed to be lovely and the site offers views but we have not managed to get there...yet.

It’s a small city with good tram service and easy to walk.

I agree with Laura. Auto and Egyptian museums are excellent. Lots of info on line about attractions in Turin. I stayed at the Concord Hotel and was very happy with the accommodations, free breakfast and convenient location. Just a short walk away is Pastificio de Filippis. Excellent pasta at reasonable prices.

We stayed at Town House 70 and would definitely stay there again. Modern hotel in a perfect location just behind Piazza Castello. They had lots of variety in their free breakfast, too. I think it was the largest room and bathroom during that trip.

I also found the Cinema Museum "sort of meh," though I had been excited about it before-hand.

We stayed in an apartment a block west of Piazza Carlo Emanuele II --- nice neighborhood and an easy walk to the Egyptian Museum and other interesting places. It seems to me that we walked around a cuter neighborhood near the Porta Palatina.

I care nothing about cars and I LOVED the car museum --- very clever exhibits, wonderfully weird old cars, and several cool documentary films about the history of cars and their place in society.

Do rent a car for one day and visit the Langhe region where the Barolo, Nebbiolo, Barbera wines and best grappa are made. Late September is really a good time to visit this region, South of Turin.

I made the planning error of arriving in Turin on Easter Sunday - practically everything was closed on that day and Easter Monday. But the Palazzo Reale was outstanding. An uncrowded Savoy palace with an excellent armor collection. The church with the Shroud of Turin is in the same square. Worth a look.

We were in Turin for four nights in May and found it a fascinating city. We traveled by train but did rent a car for four nights in Barolo. We stayed at BB Carlo Alberto which was an excellent location, lovely accommodations and great price. If you are interested PM me and I can send you our armature blog that talks about what we did. Right outside of the train station is an great TI where you can buy museum and transit pass.

We enjoyed visiting the Fiat Museum and original Eataly in southern Turin. Made for a fun day to visit both. Had my first glass of Barolo wine there, and still wish I’d bought several bottles.
