We'll be traveling through Italy in late-May. From Florence to Rome, we'd like to stop at a hill town for 1 night and 2 days. I've been hearing so many wonderful things about all 3 above. We'd like to see the more quieter part of Italy, but still see some sights, eat some more wonderful food and meet friendly people. I was thinking about staying in Orvieto and doing a day-trip to Civita. Any opinions?? Thanks!
I agree with Kent. We stopped in Orvieto and took a side trip to Civita on a trip to Italy a few years ago. We stayed at the Hotel Duomo and really enjoyed it.
Cathy,
I agree with the others! I stayed in Orvieto on my last trip and made a day trip to Civita di Bagnoregio. The lunch at Antico Forno was fantastic (I had an interesting visit with Franco, the owner, as well)!
Be sure to check Rick's books with respect to travel from Orvieto to Bagnoregio. It's an easy bus ride, and then a short ride on the shuttle to the base of the bridge at Civita. However, the Shuttle takes a "siesta" in the afternoon, so time your return trip accordingly. I encountered a rain storm when I was waiting for the shuttle to return, and got a bit wet. Fortunately, a kindly couple from Milan offered me a ride back to Orvieto, which I gladly accepted.
I really enjoyed my stay in Orvieto as well, and definitely want to make a return visit.
Happy travels!
Another vote for Orvieto! We liked the Hotel Corso--
