I am planning an itinerary for a March trip to Florence, arrival to Assisi 2 nights, Florence 5 nights with day trip to Bologna, Sienna 2 nights and home. We have been to Rome multiple times and I am looking for an alternative that could get us to the airport by 9 AM after our visit to Sienna. . I have read many suggestions Orvieto (have been there), Soriano nel Cimino and Montepulciano but the trains take too long. I can easily add days. Can anyone suggest someplace that might have a faster train connection?
Which airport are you flying out of would be useful....
If you need to be at airport by 9 am you should stay in Rome or at airport night before
Siena, Orvieto, Montepulciano are all too far, too risky
I’ve read of pleasant experiences at Fiumicino prior to Rome outbound. Is it just one night?
Fiumicino town or Ostia are less than 10 minutes from the airport, but other than being under the flight paths, they are both pretty and relaxing places to spend a last night. Beaches, restaurants, nice small B&Bs...it's always where I stay. I really don't like the airport hotels and the hotel food is a bad way to remember Italy...
Sometimes you need to acquiesce to the inevitable.
You would be leaving your hotel at 6:00am for this flight from Rome. Even if you were to find someplace with fast train service you would be leaving earlier there like 4:00am and risking travel delays. The only suggestion would be stay in one of the beach towns which are actually really close to the airport. Maybe do Ostia Antica on your last afternoon or stay on the beach and then head to the airport in the morning.
I made this hard decision for an early flight from Venice. No one wants to spend your last "in Venice" at the airport hotel but it's that or a 4:30am 140e water taxi.
Sometimes it is what it is,

Assuming you are flying out of FCO, I would suggest the town of Fiumicino just 10 minutes drive from the Airport. I stayed at the Hotel Tiber which has been recommended many times on the Forum and they have an airport shuttle. There are a number of other hotels etc in the town. Fiumicino is the home of a fishing fleet so lots of seafood restaurants around including at the hotel. Take the Leonardo Express to the Airport and call the hotel for the shuttle or take a taxi, Fiumicino Taxis, +39 06 6583629 offer service to and from Fiumicino.
If you book Hotel Tiber, avoid rooms on the top floor, which place you directly underneath the private parties held on the roof deck till midnight. Ask me how I know.
For sure, Fiumicino is a great town to stay in before departure from FCO.
We stay at Hotel Seccy but that's only one of quite a few that look fine.
It's a very lively town with some great restaurants.
Thank you all, Fiumicino it is!
