Trouble with Hertz in Orvieto?

I was about to book a rental with Hertz in Orvieto when I stumbled across a couple of very negative comments about them on Trip Advisor. I called AutoEurope about another rental and asked them why they didn't offer anything out of Orvieto and was told they had so much trouble with the Hertz franchise there they quit working with them. To pick up a car else where would require an aggravating change in our itinerary and an extra day of rental. Anyone have any experience with them?

We have used them 3 times in the past 3 years with no problems although I have seen many negative comments. The most recent time was in March of this year. The only problem was that they gave us an automatic instead of manual and it was not a "normal US automatic". My husband's words. It was constantly trying to shift gears (I think it was a french car- can't remember). So we've been lucky with each of our rentals. It is always convenient for us to rent in Orvieto.

We are picking our rental up in Siena and dropping off in Orvieto this upcoming April. We went through AutoEurope. I called them with a few questions and also asked about the Hertz in Orvieto. They mentioned they had frequent problems with this particular Hertz, including not having vehicles available upon arrival for their customers, even though reservations had been made months ahead of time. So they dropped them. If you are booking directly with Hertz you may avoid this issue? Chiusi up the road is also an option to keep in your back pocket if you experience a similar problem.

We picked up a one way rental from Hertz in September 2016. While waiting, we watched as the (only! - they were severely understaffed) clerk waited on the man ahead of us in line. He had a reservation but did not have an International driver's license. First she said she could not rent a car to him, then he pointed out the risk was entirely his and he had rented numerous times in Europe without this document. She then told him he could rent but would have to purchase the maximum insurance, changing his rental price from under 200 euros to over 500 euros. He ended up leaving without the car. We were next, she was curt but we did get the car we had reserved for the price we had been promised. She worked right through the lunch hour (according to the sign on the door). We took numerous pictures of the car before we drove away. Dropped off in Rome Termini without incident. (If you do that, remember that the Hertz dropoff is on the sixth floor of the parking garage, with little or no signage to guide you.)

I would rent from them again.

This is puzzling because our family recently booked two cars for this summer from AutoEurope. We're picking them up from Hertz at the airport in Rome and returning them a week later to Orvieto. Maybe AutoEurope just allows returns to Orvieto? We liked the drop-off in Orvieto because we want to stop there, but it's a bit of a drive from where we're staying outside of Perugia. It helps to do it on our way back to Rome

We dropped off a Hertz rental in Orvieto in May 2016. All worked out well in the end, but it was a bit rocky getting there. First of all, my phone GPS sent us to the top of the hill, where the sights are, and lots of ZTLs, but no office. It is in the lower town on a busy street, with very limited parking out front. After dropping me off and circling around a few times, my husband stopped at the gas station right across the street, but was chased off by from there. After circling again, he went back there anyway, since he did't see any other options. Meanwhile, I went into the small office which was full of people trying to get cars. We had prebooked train tickets to Rome, and our driving around had eaten into the extra time we allowed. After waiting a few minutes, I got myself to the front and said that we just wanted to return a car. Luckily, there were 2 people working there, and one came over to the gas station. After giving it a cursory look he said we were fine and could go, no paperwork, or anything. We felt a bit unsure of that, but went on in order to catch the train. About 2 months later we got the paperwork which said all was good. (It was in Italian and gave a phone number for English, which I called.)
So, give yourself plenty of plenty of time for both picking up and dropping off a car there.

DebbieP, yes, AutoEurope lets folks drop rentals in Orvieto at that Hertz but doesn't let them pick up rentals there.
