trouble booking

It is my first time to Italy and I have been trying for the last few days to book tickets to the Uffizi and for a cooking class in Cortona. I faxed for the cooking class and got no response and I have tried three times for the tickets to Uffizi. My question is, How long does it take to get a response and how do I know if it has gone through or not?

For Uffizi and Accedemia, RS recommends ask hotel to book for you. You can also find booking agencies (google Italian Art) accepting credit cards. Their mark-up is substantially higher than the 3-5 euro the hotel typically charges. My hotel did it for free.

Hi Laura,

I tried booking a reservation from the site Rick Steve's suggested, 3 months in advance, and could not get it to work. I ended up using Weekend in Firenze's website http://en.firenze.waf.it/ for both the Uffizi and Accademia. It worked just fine and I received a reponse immediately.

If the business in Cortona hasn't responded to a fax, then I would try calling them for confirmation.

If you use Skype to call them, it's only 2.1 cents/minute to call a landline in Italy from the states.

For the Uffizi, I agree it's way easier to let the hotel do it for you. If you want to call them yourself to make a reservation, dialing from a US phone: 011 - 39 - 055 294 883

I asked my B&B to do it for me. It was free, too. She sent me our reservation number by email and we brought that with us to 'check in' at the galleries.

Thank you for all of your replies. I was finally able, through much persistance, to book Uffizi online just in the nick of time. However, I still don't know what to do about the cooking class. I got the number from Rick's book thinking it was a phone number, but when I heard the weird fax sound at the other end is when I faxed, so I don't really have a phone number. I'm thinking the next step might be to try to look it up under their restaurant name. Anyway, thanks for all of the great suggestions! :)
