I am meeting friends in Tuscany on May 9th ...but will go to Venice on the 6th or 7th for a couple of days beforehand. I don't want to have to drag m suitcase on the day I arrive and the day I am leaving (pre check in and post check out of hotel). Are there lockers at the train station or anything similar where one can securely lock up their luggage while touring the city?

Actually, I don't think that there are lockers in the large train stations in Italy. They removed them for security reasons. What they now have is staffed luggage storage areas. These are great places to leave your luggage but keep in mind that these are not 24/7 places and staff occasionally are not there. Cost is about 3Euro per bag.
