I am heading to Italy this Saturday. I will arrive in and depart from Rome. In between, I will be in Puglia. I will be taking the train to and from Rome. I know I could have flown directly to Puglia, but I actually enjoy taking the train and don't consider it a waste as time as much as another cool aspect of the trip.
I like to be as spontaneous as I can with travel, but I wanted to make sure that I had a place to stay every night while still keeping my itinerary flexible. So, I booked 4 nights in Lecce, 6 nights in Bari, and 2 in Rome. Lecce and Bari will serve as my bases to visit Southern and Northern / mid Puglia.
I understand that having a car is best, though I prefer public transportation. My prior trips to Italy I used almost exclusively trains with a supplement of a scooter in Amalfi. I understand that where I am going doesn't have as good of a transportation infrastructure as my previous destinations. To this end, I will most likely be renting a scooter for day trips. I have been riding one for 12+ years in the US, including about 10 years in NYC. I also have a little experience riding one in Italy (Amalfi). I do realize the dangers, but feel comfortable with this risk.
My question is that I think I may need to choose another base if I'd like to include Matera (and possibly Castelmezzano) in Basilicata to my trip as everyone recommends that. It also seems right up my alley as I am more of a soak up the culture and history and eat a lot type of gal rather than a beachy / museumy type of gal.
It seems a bit far to do as a day trip from Bari / Lecce.
So I think my question is, should I cut the Bari stay short and then stay somewhere closer to / in Matera before I head back to Rome? The train trip to Rome is slightly longer from Matera than it is from Bari but that should be OK as I am heading back there 2 days before my flight back home.
If I do that, does anyone have any recommendations of where to stay? I like to use Airbnb and can just use that for Matera itself, though I like the idea of staying in a smaller area nearby with lots of atmosphere. The less touristy the better.
Thank you in advance for your help!
