CHANGE in Plans after lots of research decided to stay in Florence 4 days 5night - (1/2 day to Pisa) & 4 days in venice .... suggestion for place to stay? will in be frankfurt for a week in july after the workshop want to see these 2 places? traveling as couple.
flying cheaper or train cheaper... also recommendations of place to stay in florence & venice.

The most efficient way is to fly from FRA to VCE (Lufthansa only, sorry!) then after visiting Venice, take a train to Florence (2 hr trip). Then after visiting Florence fly away. If you need to go back to FRA, fly from FLR to FRA (with Lufthansa again).
You can also do the exact reverse FRA>FLR ---train Florence to Venice --- VCE>FRA.
If you don't need to go back to FRA, you could also fly back to the US from either. VCE airport has more options, including non stop to JFK, ATL (Delta) and PHL (US Air).
FLR has no direct service to the US. So from FLR you would need to connect via another EU hub (FRA, MUC, CDG, AMS, ZRH, FCO).
Don't know much about hotels. I know La Scaletta in Florence (http://www.hotellascaletta.it/), which I recommend (also in Rick Steves' recommended list) and, if you like luxury, the Ponte Vecchio Suites and Spa (http://www.pontevecchiosuites.com/). Both are near the Ponte Vecchio in the Oltrarno (south of Arno River). The latter is more expensive.
Have no suggestions for Venice, since haven't stayed in the historical center of Venice for a while (last time a couple of years ago I had a car, so I stayed in Mestre in the mainland).

Perhaps flying out of Pisa offers more possibilities as it is a busier airport than Florence.
Day 1 Fly to Venice (3)
Day 2 Venice
Day 3 Venice
Day 4 am Train to Florence (2)
Day 5 Florence
Day 6 pm Train to Pisa (1)
Day 7 Fly from Pisa

After reading so much about Florence & Venice have decided to stay longer at both places 5 days in Florence & 4 days in Venice.... now the hard part finding a place to stay on budget... is it possible to find a place less than 100per night including breakfast?
