Trip to Chianti & San Giminano

I will be driving from Florence to the San Giminano area for 3 nights. Any recommendations on restaurants in the Chianti area to hit on the way to our B&B from the airport? Also, any suggestions on towns to visit while in SG? Is it worth driving to the coast for the day?

Nots sure what the actual distance was but if staying in SG - Siena is definitely worth a day visit. We stayed in Siena for 4 days and visited SG as a day trip.

If you want to get off of the autobahn and explore the Chianti Region on your way to San Gimignano, I would drive on SR222, the Via Chiantigiana, which is one of the most enjoyable motoring routes in Italy. It runs directly south from Florence to Sienna through the middle of the Chianti Classico wine zone of Tuscany, Italy. Check the route out on Google Maps (Florence to SR222 to San Gimignano). I am sure there are many restaurants in the towns along this route. While you are in SG, you could go to Volterra. We really enjoyed following Rick Steves' walk through this town. Lots to see along with stores and restaurants. I would NOT drive to the coast. We made this mistake last fall. All of the sudden, we found ourselves on narrow streets, dodging mopeds and trucks. To top if off, it was dark and raining. If you want to see the coast, park and car on the outskirts and take the train in. There's a reason most of the Italian cars along the coast have dents in them. Have fun on your trip!
