Trip plans. What do you think?

First time to Europe for my husband and I. We will be celebrating 10 years of marriage. I thought I would post our rough schedule and maybe some of you that are seasoned travelers could give us some tips. We will be staying in Vernazza on our actual wedding anniversary so romantic suggestions of any kind would be more than welcomed. Thanks for taking the time. It will be high season and hot! July 16/17 Rome 18/19 Florence 20/22 Cinque Terre 23/24 Venice
25/26/ Rome, possible side trip to Siena Fly out the 27th.

You have a lot planned for 10 days. First, if you are going to visit Sienna it's best done from Florence. Your dates don't make much sense as you have Rome listed for 16/17 and Florence listed 16/19. I would suggest cutting out Venice as your time is so short and it's such a long trip to get there and back. You'll lose about half a day each time you change cities and hotels. This will impact how much time you have to spend in each location. You can add a day to Florence and Rome if you cut out Venice. This will make your anniversary trip a little more relaxes. Donna

Sadly, something has to go- either Venice or the CT- your call. My call? I would save Venice for your 12th or 13th anniversary. Have a great trip!

I agree, you'd be happier spending more time everywhere and doing away with one area...unless you are expecting to do a lot of hiking, i'd skip the CT...it was difficult to get to and from and there isn't much to do if you're not hiking. it is beautiful, but if you're not hiking or you get a rainy day you may wind up bored. in my opinion, venice is too beautiful to miss. (though in fairness, i was there in the fall, and i've been told that it can be unplesant in the summer.) you should try to spend a night in Siena...that was my favorite of all of the places that i went in Italy. and the more time you have to spend in rome, the better. it can be overwhelming.

Romantic trip...cut out Venice??? I would cut down the time in Rome.... having been to all many times I think the most romantic things you have listed are CT. Venice and I would spend some time in Tuscany. I think the high travel season and hot weather in August is not especially romantic in those crowded cities like Florence & Rome. I have been there in August, and even though CT was hot at least it is by the sea. If you stay out of Florence you can do a day trip in and have a wonderful romantic village to spend the night in. Whatever you do... it is Italy and I am sure you will have a wonderful time. Just don't underestimate how hot and crowded those cities can be.

Hi Stacy-you'll have a fabulous time! I did Rome/Florence/Venice/Amalfi on my honeymoon back in 1996; but we had 16 days. It looks like you have 11 full days. I too think you might want to consider eliminating one city. I'm returning to Italy in July and I'm visiting Rome, Vernazza, Venice (and Positano) - so if it were me I'd drop Florence (but many will disagree). I prefer architecture & natural beauty to art. I spent two days in Venice on my honeymoon and it wasn't enough time to really enjoy it; we are going back for 8 days on this trip! Go with your heart (and your husbands of course) and choose what you think will make YOU guys most happy - not where you think you should go. A good side trip from Rome is Orvieto (this is highly recommended by others on this site & R. Steves-I hope to go myself in July).

Packing, unpacking, waiting in train stations sound like the opposite of romantic. Also, Rome, Florence and Venice will be quite crowded and hot. I would add a day or so to Rome so you do not have to walk in the heat so much every day. Then I would head to the CT and cool off on the coast and then head home

July is probably the worst time to go to Italy because Italians are traveling. I would avoid CT (crowded), Venice (humid and crowded), and Rome (HOT). Spend more time on the coast...do Lucca, the rest of the Ligurian coast, Lake Como may be nice then, Bologna, Verona...visit the mountains...maybe even go up to Vienna or PragueRome will be 100 degrees with people everywhere.
