Trip planning again

Hi All,

Just trying to plan our next trip to Italy in May. My wife and I will be spending 5 nights in Rome, this is our 2nd time there, then heading south and eventually crossing over to the Adriatic Sea for an overnight ferry to Croatia. Total trip will probably be about 3 weeks. Just trying to decide what to do after Rome. Should we do a day trip to Naples from Rome or Sorrento? This is my preliminary plan, I welcome any suggestions.

Rome

May 1 Rest day and some sight seeing

2 Colosseum underground tour

3 3 hr Catacombs tour

4 Appian Way bike tour

5 Ostia Antica

6 day trip from to Naples from Rome or is one from Sorrento better?

7 Sorrento

8 Capri

While in Sorrento we want to go to Pompeii, and the Amalfi coast. Is 3 - 4 days in Sorrento enough or should we allow more time? We like to take in a little bit of everything not any one thing in particular. Heading over to the Adriatic for the overnight ferry to Croatia are there any must see sights that we should consider?

Thanks in advance for all your help!

I am in the planning stage for a trip to Italy about the same time you are and was originally planning on arriving in Rome on May 1. Since then I found out that May 1 is Labor Day in Italy. There is a concert in Rome that draws 1 million participants. The state owned historical sites reduce their entrance fees to 1 Euro. Many sites including the Vatican and the Borghese Gallery are closed. Rome will be a zoo. Many hotels/B&Bs are already booked. I have since changed my plans and will delay my arrival from 1 to 7 days depending on when I can get the best air fare.

May 1 is not that big of a problem. Actually a good day to arrive as you won't be doing much sightseeing. Restaurants will be open, especially in the tourist areas.

On Day 6 transfer to Sorrento and make that your base for 4 nights. Use one day to day-trip to Naples, another for Pompeii, another for Capri. You can certainly stay longer. We spent a week there one December and enjoyed the relaxed pace. Of course the whole Amalfi Coast is there to explore, and if you are hikers it is a wonderland.

Be sure to stop and see Matera on your way to Adriatic.
We spent 2 nights there in Sept.
Stay in the Sassi section of the city.

YES- another big vote for Matera and that whole area.

I really enjoyed it.

A daytrip to Naples is MUUUCH easier from Sorrento than it is from Rome.

Thank you for all the replies. I have an apartment reserved in Rome on Via Boschetto so I'm not concerned with lodging. My wife and I usually hit the ground running so if there is a special holiday going on we'll be excited about that. Thanks for the tip on Matera, I'll look into that, and it looks like I'll spend 4-5 days in Sorrento then. Now to look into lodging for Sorrento.

We have been to Ostia Antica and to Pompeii and I would skip the O.A. day trip and do Herculaneum and Pompeii. You can do it in one day from Sorrento. We loved Herculaneum even more than Pompeii, and we were disappointed a little in Ostia Antica. We also loved Sorrento.
