Trip from Geneva to Lake Como via Milan

I am traveling from Geneva, Switzerland via Milan to the Lake Como region. I plan to spend one night in Milan, visit the Duomo, then catch a train/bus to the Lake Como area. I will return from Lake Como area to Lusanne, Switzerland to meet up with a tour group. Can you please help me with the most efficient way to do this? I do not yet know where I will stay in the Lake Como region but I am looking at Varenna. Also, If this isn't easily doable, i'm considering renting a car and visiting the eastern towns of France. Any thoughts on this? Thank you for any and all help.

There are several daily direct trains from Geneva to Milan. See www.sbb.ch or www.trenitalia.com

Many towns on lake Como are easily reached by train. Como has frequent service from Milano Centrale, and so does Varenna and the other towns on the Eastern coast. For Belliaggio you would need a bus or a taxi, or take a boat...
Trains: again see www.trenitalia.com

The trains from Milan to the lake Como area are mostly local trains, that do not require advance purchase of tickets. For the Geneva - Milano (and back) I would buy tickets in advance.
