For starters, my husband and I lived in Italy (25 years ago) and have traveled pretty extensively in the northern part, and have been to Rome half a dozen times or more. We went to Naples and Sorrento once, about 25 years ago and would like to return. Our primary trip is actually to Turkey/Greece, but we have tickets to Naples and no real plans for 10 days. We have rented a flat in Naples for 3 days (including the day we arrive) and then we are renting a car and leaving. (day 1 arrive & get oriented, day 2 Archeological museume, day 3 food tour - which we have never done) I have booked a flat in Sorrento for 7 days, but it turns out that we actually have 8 days before we fly out of Rome. I am not too keen on driving on the Amalfi coast but we want to see it. Our current plan:
Day 1 (rent car) revisit Herculaneum (with archeologist) and see Villa Mistiri & Oplontis before driving to Sorrento.
Day 2 - Ferry to Capri for the day (never been)
Day 3 - Hang in Sorrento
Day 4 - Ferry to Amalfi & positano on the way back
Day 5 - drive to Lecce via Bari
Day 6 - explore Lecce & maybe Brindisi?
Day 7 - drive to Matera, soak in mineral baths?
Day 8 - Enjoy Matera
Day 9 - leave and drive to hotel outside Fiumicino to catch flight the next day.
Not sure if we are shortchanging the Amalfi coast? Is it too much to try and see so much of southern Italy? We have never been, and not sure if we will be back so trying to capture as much as possible. We enjoyed Sorrento before, but it was 25 years ago and we had small children and weren't as able to walk all day long with toddlers. We heard Lecce was beautiful, and from what I see, Matera is not to be missed either.
I kind of hate having only 2 nights in each, but not sure how else to handle it? Any feedback would be appreciated!
