I think a lot of people have done it, just not me. What is your issue?

I travelled round trip Venice/Trieste by train a couple years ago for a day trip to Lipica.
Do you have a question about mode of transportation or something else?

Getting off a cruise ship in Trieste and staying over night in Venice. Where do trains and buses depart from? How was the conation of the bus, have heard they were smelly and dirty. Any info would be much appreciated. Thanks

Trains go from Trieste Centrale station. Since I don't know exactly where your boat docks, I assume you can get a taxi. Flixbus goes from the Autostazone, which is next to Trieste Centrale, but stops at either Venezia Mestre, in which case you would have to board a train for the short ride into Venice proper, or Venezia Tronchetto, in which case you would have to take the People Mover over to Piazzale Roma for the main vaporetto dock, or the No 2 boat from Tronchetto Mercato.

I have never been on a Flixbus, but never heard anyone refer to them as "smelly and dirty".

I see that there is a 2-hour train that travels closer to the coast and a 3-hour train that goes up to Udine and though Coniglionano. Any guidance on which is more scenic? I'd gladly spend the extra hour to see some interesting sites from the train. Thanks for your help.

Pretty much flat agricultural land, same as the short route, only longer and more expensive.

The train service between Trieste and Venice is not very frequent. Try to take a RV train, cheap, takes 2 hours and goes to Santa Lucia. Regional trains take forever. Fast trains stop only in Mestre and you need a connection to Santa Lucia. Do not worry about scenery, there isn't.

There is an RV trains approximately every hour, so that would be the way to go. Takes 2h5m, and you just buy your ticket at the station and get on.

I have used countless buses and trains in various parts of Italy and have never once encountered a dirty smelly one.
You’ll be fine!
