Trieste Recommendations

Trieste doesn't seem to get many posts, and we will have one full day there for a family traveling this July (will be coming from Slovenia and will have already seen the caves, Lippizaner stallions, etc). So any recommendations of specific things in Trieste to see and do (we will have a car there also)?

Trieste doesn't get the attention is deserves. The best part of the city is around and between the Canal Grande and the Piazza Unita d'Italia. Best eating places are along the Canal Grande. A car is totally useless. Put it somewhere on a parking lot.

Thanks. We will have the car already from Slovenia trip and working our way back to Italy and spending a full day in Trieste. What are your favorite things to recommend we see there if we have a full day?

continuing "west" of trieste towards venice is aquielia....5th century site of archealogical digs....the old cathedral has amazing mosaic floors, is a world heritage site thru UNESCO. admission fee was very modest, snacks, restrooms etc available on site...id highly recomend allowing an hour or 2 for that.

I posted a trip report in October 2015 in this forum on my two day stay in Trieste that you might find helpful. I'm too technologically challenged to provide a link.

I'm following this post with interest. We'll be spending three nights in Trieste this September. Mary Sue, thanks for your trip report. I've added it to my planning notes.

Hey that area of Aquileia Is so interesting. I looked up the train schedule and the Regional trains are only
1.27 hours Santa Lucia station to Aquileia with many times and plenty of return regional trains all afternoon.
My favorite thing to see in Italy are mosaics and this looks really interesting. We leave in less than 2 weeks with five days in Venice. Will be reading up on this.
Is this walkable from the train station or will I need to rent a car?

On your route to Venice try to fit in Palmanova: a well-preserved fortified town built around 1600.
