Anyone have any suggestions on hotels and must see's in Trieste. We're planning three days there in April. Grazie! Ciao!
You'll probably get more comments on hotels if you tell us your total nightly hotel budget, how many people are in your group, and how many rooms you need.
Where did you stay and was it affordable?
We were in Trieste 4 years ago. We stayed at the Hotel James Joyce which was very nice. We got a good price last minute through Booking.com. The price was around 80€ a night. Trieste is very beautiful with great seafood.
Two years ago I had a very pleasant stay in the Hotel alla Posta on the Piazza Oberdan. Strategically halfway between railway station and the Canal Grande. It was very reasonably priced. Their website or Booking.com will give you the exact amount.
For me the special thing about Trieste is its Austrian-Hungarian past. It is at its best in the area between and around the Canal Grande and the Piazza Unita d'Italia.
Nothing wrong with Trieste, but in my opinion, you can find more interesting Italian cities to visit.
I was about to ask a similar question. Spending a few nights in Venice late September / early October, and doing an overnight trip by train to Trieste, which I have never visited.
I will need a single room, hopefully around the 60 euro price point.
The Hotel alla Posta, which I can recommend, has single rooms for around EUR 60. (I checked for June, reservations for September not yet being possible.)
something a little different, if you want a break from museums etc, is visiting the Grotto Gigante which is located on the bluff overlooking Trieste. the TI had info on it. We took a bus from the train station, then walked about 3 blocks to the site which also has a small museum attached. They were very careful to tell us that it is 500 steps down into the cave and 500 steps back up, and if you have heart problems or breathing problems visiting is not recommended. The guided tour lasted about an hour and was led by a grad student who was also doing research at the cave.
Thanks everyone for the info!!! Thomas
