Anyone know much about Trieste? Is it worth going there? I plan to spend most of my time in Umbria, Tuscany, and Cinque Terre. I realize it is not exactly close, so should I bother?
Rick has not included Trieste among his top priorities for a traveler's first month or two in Italy. I enjoyed the day I spent in Trieste, while waiting for a bus to Slovenia, but would certainly recommend Venice more highly, along with other towns. Train travel along the main line from Florence to Trieste takes 4.25 hours with a connection at Venezia Mestre (mainland) station. From what city will you fly home?
This will actually be my 5th trip to Italy, and I have been to Venice twice. I was just looking for someplace different as I have done the usual places. I am going to Parma (never been) and CT (have been) for sure! Deciding if Orvieto and Civita are too far away ( have been there before, but would like to go back) or try Trieste, which is new.
Charloltte, now you must go there and report back to us. That's what Europe through the Back Door travel is all about.
