We'll be in the Veneto in late Sept. We are considering a day trip to Trieste (just saw an old Burt Wolf episode about it) and wondering if anyone has been there and if they have any advise or info about it. Thanks
We stayed there for a few nites when we were touring the area. Nothing special, just a nice town with a big seaside walkway..... a good base while looking at the local area.
We really enjoyed touring the Grotto Gigante (not to be missed!), the old roman seaport of Aquileia with the Roman mosacis on the Church floor (interesting).
We drove to Goriza and were facinated by the Redipuglia Memorial (WW1 memorial that has the remains of 100,000 soldiers) This memorial was huge, and climbing all of the steps and looking at the names lets you see just how many lost there lives. They also have some of the orig. WW1 trenchs open, and some of the artillery.
The local food is not to be missed. We ate at one of Fred Plotkins recomended restaurants just outside of town. It was fabulous, but not cheap. (Fred Plotkin, author of Ital for the Gormet Traveler. His res. pic are one-of-a-kind)
The white wines of the area are the best in Italy. We also stayed at a winery in Cormons(fantastic!)
