We will be on a bike ride in Slovania for 9 days in the fall.. After the bike ride we are thinking of going to Trieste and have read about the UNESCO archeological site in Aquiella, near Trieste. Has anyone been to that site?. How much time from Trieste to get there and visit.? Any hotel recommendations for Trieste would be great. Thx!
We visited Aquileia last year but we came from the west, not from Trieste. We were visiting friends and they took us for a ride to visit the ruins of Aquileia, the pretty coastal town of Grado and the star fort town of Palmanova, all in the same general area. We did not go on to Trieste but looking at map Alquileia is less than an hour by car from Trieste. It is a very small town. At one time it was actually on the coast but now is slightly inland. It is an interesting daytrip. I think we spent about two to three hours there. There is a walking path that runs alongside the Roman forum ruins but the best site is the mosaic floor of the church and the underground crypt. There was also an interesting cemetery right there at the church. I have read that there is a museum in town but we did not go there. There was actually a bike race in the area that finished at the plaza by the church the day we were there.
A friend and I stayed at the Hotel all’Arco in Trieste last September. Nice clean and comfortable large rooms. Very convenient to walk anywhere in Trieste. We both enjoyed our stay and recommend it highly.
Thanks for the hotel info! It is always good to get a good recommendation!

Thank you so much for the detailed info on Aquiella as I have had trouble finding reviews. This will help us plan our time there and it sounds like a half a day is probably enough!
