Trieste/Adriatic in August

Hello All - My wife and I will be driving down from the mountain area in Slovenia (in a Slovenian rental car) towards the Adriatic and Google maps tells me it is just as easy to drive to Trieste, Italy as it is to stay in Slovenia and drive to Piran. I thought a day or two along the Adriatic would be nice and we have not been to either spot before.
1) Is driving a Slovenian rental across a border an issue? Does anyone know?
2) Does anyone have an opinion on the difference/points of interest between Trieste and Piran?
3) Are there any coastal/beach communities that you would recommend for a little R&R other than these two cities that I am missing?
4) Is the swimming good that time of year? Water temp., etc.
5) I had heard the line at the border to cross into Croatia can be quite long - is it slow to cross from Italy into Slovenia (or for that matter from Slovenia into Italy?) with car?

Thank you for any insights you can provide -

  1. Inquire with the rental company. It is often an issue the other way around. Not sure East to West.
  2. Trieste and Castello di Miramare are interesting.
  3. The best would be in Croatia (Crikvenica, Krk, etc.)
  4. Warmest water is in August and September.
  5. There are no border controls between Italy and Slovenia any longer since Schengen. It’s like driving across state lines in the US.

Thank you -
If you know - what are the beaches like? Where would they be? I looked at Grado, Italy but someone on this site suggested that at that time of year it isn't very clean -

Re. Roberto's response to #1 above--agree. You should not have any problem driving from Slovenia to Italy. We did Croatia/Slovenia/Italy in that particular order because of the rental car situation--flying into Dubrovnik and out of Venice. We took the bus from Dubrovnik to Split and picked up our rental car in Split upon leaving. Croatia and Slovenia are beautiful--Dubrovnik, Split, Plitvice National Park, Lake Bled & the Julian Alps, Ljublana, etc. Have a great trip.

Swimming should be good - it's the main reason lots of northern Europeans go to the Adriatic in August. Do expect traffic, especially on weekends and at the start and end of the month.

Expect LOTS of traffic at the beginning of August and summer weekends!
