We’ll be staying in Venice for 5 days and thinking of taking train to Trieste to stay for 2 days. Is the trip worth it? Or would it be better to take train to Milan?
Just to clarify, 2 days in Trieste in addition to the 5 in Venice?
Depends on your interests and where you are going next
Trieste was a wonderful surprise for us! There is plenty to see and do in those 2 days. It's a great place to walk, stop for a coffee, or just stop to sit and enjoy the views (in front of you and behind you). Highly recommended!
Trieste has spent a few centuries as the main port of the Austrian Empire, it is surrounded by Slovenian territory, so the city has an individual vibe, somewhat closer to Austria than Italy. I would not take days out of Venice, but a couple of additional days in Trieste can be a surprising addition. Be sure to have lunch at Buffet Da Pepi.
We visited Trieste decades ago and it was good, but not one of my top places every visited.
Trieste feels like a border town, very different from the rest of Italy. We visited Risiera di San Sabba, the only concentration camp in Italy. Personally, I did not like Trieste at all.
I think it depends on how many times you've been to Italy and what other places you have visited as well as where you're going next. I've been to Trieste but I think there are many other places I would put ahead of it as well as ahead of Milan: Padua, Verona and Bergamo are all more or less on the route to Milan.
Ate lunch at https://www.yelp.com/biz/baracca-e-burattini-trieste on our way to Piran.
was it good? bad? What did you have?
