Trieste

As a side trip to our June Venice trip we would like to visit Trieste (Italy/Austrian border) for a day. This is the birthplace of my wife's father. I would like to hear the experiences of other Trieste visitors. Things to do and places of interest, and special dining places which are note worthy.

We only spent a couple of nights here on our trip into the wine country of Friuli Venezia Giulia, but we had a good time. When we were there, everything was shut down because of a holiday. There was only one restaurant that was memorable. It was out of town.......and I forget the name. But it was reccomended by Fred Plotkin in one of his books about the best places to eat in Italy, and this place is one of the best restaurants that we have tried. Also go visit the Grotto Gigante......the world's largest accesible cave. It was fun! If you have time, stop in Aquilea on the way, and see the ruins of an old Roman port, and the original Roman tile floor in the church. A quick visit to Goriza is fun also.
