Has anyone been around the Trevi Fountain recently? From what I have been reading, it is currently all covered with scaffolding and it is not worth going over to try and see it. I have been to Rome twice and and experienced the fountain both times, but I am going with a friend this time who has never been to Italy. Planning on doing Rick's "Heart of Rome" walk, but wondering if we should just detour around the Trevi area. From what I hear, the renovation was supposed to be going on for quite a while longer.
Here's a link to a live webcam so you can see what Trevi Fountain looks like right now.
That is so cool! Thank you so much Jeff! Yes, I think we will detour around the Trevi area -- too bad. But my friend is assuming she will be back and see the Fountain another time in all its glory.
I was at Trevi in September and I'm so glad I went. It is Not all covered in scaffolding. That bridge will bring you right up to those magnificent winged horses and the larger-than-life god men who attend them, and all the other land and sea creatures on that uncovered tier. We may never get that close to that monument again in our lifetime. I still feel the exhilaration I felt at that moment.
The moment was not lost on anybody. The foto opps were plentiful and hilarious as visitors took pictures of friends and family posing among the mythical statues. The bridge tends to go slow as people stop for fotos, but it is so much Fun that nobody hurries.
Guards stand at both ends of the bridge and allow only so many people on at a time. They also watch us very intently so I obeyed the signs that said don't throw coins from the bridge.
There is a little pool at street level opposite the bridge where you can throw coins. I encourage you and your friend to go experience Trevi in this new way and enjoy it.
Sandra, I agree. A chance to get that close to the figures is not likely to happen again in our lifetime so, if it were me, I would not pass it up.
Sandra and Nancy thanks so much for your input! You both have put a new spin on visiting the Trevi even though it is being renovated-- it is going back into the itinerary definitely. Now I can't wait to see it from a new perspective 😀
Any idea how long the renovation will take?
