Trestevere OK for Early AM Walk to the Train?

Was listening to one of Rick's podcasts and it was mentioned that Trestevere is a bit of an "other side of the tracks" neighborhood.

Since I have an 8am flight, I'm looking to catch the first train out of Trestevere to the airport, which I believe leaves at 5:20am. I have a hotel a few blocks away on hold, but not sure if it would be a safe walk for me (female) and my 8 year old son, that early in the morning?

Alternately, should I just stay out by the airport and catch a cab in the morning, since my flight is early?

Thank you!

Trastevere is on the other side of the river (Tras=trans=beyond + Tevere=Tiber river) not on the other side of the tracks, not even figuratively since it has become a rather trendy neighborhood. You are safe. Besides at that time in the morning all potential criminals are still sleeping.

Follow Roberto's advice: just walk those few blocks. Trastevere, as he explained, is a normal neighbourhood.

Be sure to buy your tickets a couple days earlier or at the station when you come in. Locate the validation box so you know where that is easy so that you can walk directly in, stamp your tickets, and head to the platform. That way you will appear to be someone who knows exactly what they are doing. Makes you look like half a local.

It never seemed to be the wrong side of the tracks to me.

Rick is speaking historically, when Trastevere was a section of Rome where the poorer people lived. Are you a few blocks away from the Trastevere train station? (Termini wouldn't make sense.) It will be perfectly safe in the early morning, as long as you use common sense. As mentioned, buy your tickets a day or two before, so you don't have to hassle with them that morning. If the ticket window is closed and you don't want to deal with the machines, you can go to the newsstand (follow the signs to the platform - It's on your left) and buy them there. And don't forget to validate them before you get on the train.

Thank you very much! My husband & other son are flying out the day before (midday) so I'll buy my ticket then. Perfect. Thank you!

We did that last year on several mornings. Once morning we left our place in Trastevere at 6AM and walked to the vatican which took 30-40 minutes and felt safe. On the morning we left Rome it was still dark and we walked to the taxi stand which was about 3 blocks and it was fine. We are in our 60s.

I have walked around Roma at every hour of the day and night, and always felt safe. Trastevere is a great location, you will probably not be alone at that hour, especially heading to the train station.
