We are looking at breaking up a train trip between Austria and Venice with an overnight stop. Trento appears on the path and looks interesting. Has anyone here stopped there? Nice town with good food and wine? Interesting walks around town or out? We have previously stayed in Bolzano and like it there but might like to go someplace new.
Verona too. Chances are you will be changing trains in Verona anyhow. So you might as well check it out (if you have never been).
I think Verona is on the train route after Venice. I haven't been to Trento, but Trieste might be interesting for you The trip from Vienna to Venice involves a train, bus, and another train, unless something has changed since 2013. If I had only a few days, I would press on to Venice.
I'll be there in 2 months. I'll let you know.
Thanks for your comments. We will have five nights in Venice regardless how we get there, and spent a month there last October, so I am not concerned about cutting into Venice time. We like to explore the Veneto and Trentino regions a bit while in the area, and previously have stayed in Verona, Bolzano, Bassano del Grappa, Malcescine on Lago di Garda, and several places in the Dolomites.
This time we will not rent a car, so just looking for an interesting stop on the train line. Trieste might work, depending where in Austria we would be coming from. That could be either Vienna or Salzburg, depending on what is going on musically. I think we want to see Hundertwasser's work, so that weighs toward Vienna but makes for longer travel. Trento is right on the way if we come from Salzburg, which is why I thought of it. But we are certainly open to other suggestions.
I the meantime I'll look forward to Sam's report on Trento.
