My husband would like to be in/near the mountains for at least a day during our trip to Italy in December. We will be in Venice, and thought going up to Trent from there would be a great side trip. If not Trent, any other suggestions?

Maybe you can visit the town of Belluno, at the foot of the Dolomites and much closer to Venice.

Trento isn't really in the mountains. You can see them from the city, but it sits in a deep valley. Might be kind of far from Venice to make it a daytrip.
