I need to request a refund from Trenitalia and the form is asking for a Swift code. My main bank is Chase, and I have just the Swift code, but how else will they identify my account for the refund? Chase just keeps telling me to utilize the Swift code.
Between your Swift code and your account number they have everything they need. The Swift code identifies your bank name, the country it is in, the location, and branch.
The Swift code indicates the bank (Chase) and I think it's 033 for Chase.
The bank account is the other piece you need to carry out he bank transfer,
The Europeans use a 16 digit code called IBAN (International Bank Account Number). The U.S. doesn't so you need swift and bank number to carry out the international transaction.
Roberto, the SWIFT code is 11 characters long NOT 3 digits long. Often though, only the first 8 characters are required. Just giving a 3 digit number plus an account number will not work.

http://www.westpac.com.au/faq/swift-codes/ (an Australian reference to show it is the same the world over).
The swift code for my bank (Chase) is CHASUS33 (I remembered a 33 somewhere).
Just verified in my many transfers records from my Italian bank to the US.
All I need to enter is that code and my Chase account number and my money arrives from my Italian account to my US account within just a couple of days.
ok thanks for the tips guys.
