Trenitalia ticket purchase

I have been attempting to help a friend purchase tickets on the Trenitalia website. The message appears: "We are sorry, this solution cannot be purchased pm this sales channel." I do not understand this, is the problem that I am using a new computer for the first time, is the website down, or is it too early to purchase for a May 20 trip Venice to Zermatt. Any suggestions are appreciated.

It's been a few years since I've used the website, but I think we ended up having to use a credit card rather than paypal. The site was finicky and we had to mess around with our payment options.

You are trying to buy a trip that includes a Swiss domestic train. Trenitalia's system often struggles with booking Swiss trains, as the fare rules are very different.

Book this on SBB. You will end up with multiple tickets.
- One or more for Italian High Speed trains. These are proper Trenitalia tickets. You can even add them to the Trenitalia app and manage them there.
- A connecting ticket for the Brig - Zermatt part.

My choice would be the 11:48 departure from Venice, with a change in Milano and Brig.

There may be a couple different elements in play here. I was booking tickets in March and got that error and it turned out I could buy fast train tickets for March but not local tickets so I was getting the error. I ended up buying just the fast train tickets and I was fine. There's no need to buy local regionale tickets early so I'll just wait.

The easiest way to check is to try and buy the same route in January and see if it works. This worked for me through the end of February but not on March 1st which was the tip off that there was a timing error. If there are sections try each section individually because it may just be one element you can't buy and that is enough to cause the error.

Or as someone suggested it may be having an issue booked non-Italian tickets - either timing or another issue - and not being able to book all segments can throw that error.

Good luck,

Which is the best option: Trinitaia Venice St Lucia to Domodossola, then use SBB Domodossola to Zermatt? Or VCE to Brig or Visp and SBB from either Brig or Visp to Zermatt? Is there an advantage of each?

Way too early. Wait to about March.

Best is to just book this in one go with SBB.

You will get advance discounted fares for the Frecciarossa and EC trains, and get a discounted connection ticket for the Brig - Zermatt part.

No matter where you book you will always be travelling on Trenitalia from Venice till Domodossola, and SBB from Domodossola to Brig or Visp, and then on MGB onwards. But if you book the through EC service you do not need to change trains in Domodossola, and for all practical purposes you can treat the whole Swiss transport network as if run by one company...

You might check on TRAINLINE. Yes it's a third party seller but I use it all the time. Booked out trains for May and June 2026 already.

I, too, got frustrated with Trenitalia last year and booked on Trainline.

"Booked out trains for May and June 2026 already."

I doubt any trains that far in the future are booked out already...

Anway, Trainline is a good option, as they will look for the cheapest tickets for each segment, and they are less picky of foreign credit cards then SBB.

I think it might have been a typo. The poster may have meant to say :

[I] booked our trains for May and June 2026 already.

I am still confused on which company to purchase these tickets.

With trainline will all passes Italian trains and Swiss train be printable from their website? Will SBB allow me to print all tickets and select Italian seat reservations? With Trenitalia will I get all tickets which are printable? or Use Trenitalia for Italian tickets and SBB for Swiss (from Domodossola or Brig or Visp) also will we need to exit the train in Domodossola if SBB ticket (or GA pass, Saver Day pass is used) is from Domodossola to Zermatt?
