Trenitalia Siena to Rome Termini - 15 min to get from Regional to Frecciarossa?

First time train traveler .... I am assuming that we can get to from our Regional train that arrives in Frienze SM Novella to our Frecciarossa highspeed train that will transport us to Roma Termini in the 15 minute per the booking. Using the Trenitalia website to book. Assuming Basic Super Economy is a good offering (no need to make changes once booked). We will be traveling Oct 1, so I am assuming the earlier we purchase, the better (I see some Premium seating is already sold out). Please advise!

The 2 furthest tracks at SMN are 120 meters away. If you want more time to transfer, make two separate purchases and pick a later train to Rome.

Check Italotreno's prices before deciding you want to travel with Trenitalia's Freccias. Italo is often cheaper.

I doubt some seats are actually sold out, some fares may be. All Discounted tickets in all classes are capacity controlled and Trenitalia releases only a tiny number of cheap tickets for the more expensive seats.

You know there are direct buses from Siena to Roma Tiburtina , don't you?

Hello psullsp,

All the tracks in the Florence train station all leave from the same long platform. (See the Google photo I included - sorry for the long link.) Assuming your train is on time from Siena 15 minutes should be fine to make it from one side to even the furthest track. Inside the station there are really only tracks 5-16 and they are all on the same level so there aren't even stairs to contend with.

I would recommend having the Trenitalia app so you can get a track assignment for your next train, be ready and move from one to the new assigned track with alacrity. Also have your tickets handy in case you need to flash "proof of ticket" to access the train platform because the guards occasionally care to ask.

But I also might suggest you may not want to build in this kind of excitement in to your vacation and leave yourself more room and/or book tickets that you can re-book if needed. Italian trains often inject their own unexpected excitement without you needing to intentionally needing to add any yourself. ;)

Have a great trip,
=Tod

Connections between two Trenitalia trains are always protected if you miss the second train because of Trenitalia. Even when you have purchased the cheapest tickets. psullsp pick a later train if you want, but do not waste money with fares that can be rebooked.

Since you have only 15 minutes, I think you are not going to exit the tracks area, so nobody's going to check your tickets. Anyway I'd show my mobile/ paper ticket to the first conductor waiting next to the train to Rome, just to be sure you did not miss any announcement. Just like airport gates, tracks can change at the last minute.

You can also book Siena - Rome on Italo (www.italotreno.it), Trenitalia's competitor. The first leg will be on a Trenitalia Regional train as well, but the second leg will be on an Italo. And the connection is protected here as well.

I'm going to echo Dario's question - are you aware there is a bus?

I love high speed trains, but to do Siena - Rome by train takes around 3.5 hours.
The bus takes around 3 hours and booked early enough, costs less than half the price.

Trains from Siena arrive at lower numbered tracks. The first full-lenght track is #5, tracks #1, #1A, #2, #3, #4 are shorter and depart from the west wing, so you have to walk (one or two minutes) to the main gallery. It is very likely the Siena train will arrive at the west wing, while Frecciarossa are usually assigned the central tracks, from #7 to #14; assignments change frequently and you can really know the exact track only few minutes before the Frecciarossa arrives.

At SMN station Frecciarossa trains usually arrives 8 to 10 minutes before their scheduled departure time (at Florence SMN trains change direction), so as soon as you get down from the Siena train walk without delay to the main gallery. It is likely departure boards will already show the Frecciarossa track and maybe it will be already waiting at its track. It can be done in 15 minutes without rushing (but also without wasting time), if the Siena train is delayed it may get difficult.

Thank you everyone for your feedback (sorry, I don't know how to answer individually to responses). What bus companies should I look at to go from Siena to Rome? It looks like Trenitalia and ItaloTreno are only trains?

yes, 2 competitors on the same tracks is plenty. It is pretty crowded with such frequent trains already. Not much room for more.

EDIT - added:

Trenitalia is the big national train company, ItaloTreno (my preference) is the much smaller, usually a little less expensive, really nice trains company. Between the two of them there are trains several times an hour, all day.
