Trenitalia Regional train tickets

We are trying to buy point to point tickets on Trenitalia's website. We signed up as a customer on the website and have purchased tickets from Varenna to Vernazza for the end of May. But for all of the other trips that we are planning the website shows the schedule but doesn't allow us to purchase tickets except for Intercity routes. Is it possible to purchase Regional routes on the website or do we need to wait until we arrive in country? Thanks Shar

No, there are no discounts and no reservations for the Regional trains so there is absolutely no need for advance purchase. These trains never sell out. If all the seats are taken, you stand. IC routes require reservation so you can buy them earlier. Other than discounts, there is no other reason to buy early. Trains rarely sell out.

If you are trying to buy regional tickets they are usually only sold a week in advance. If you are buying tickets that use several types of trains you can buy them further in advance. For regional tickets there is no need to buy them in advance. You can either buy them the day of travel or a day or two before. There are no discounts on regional trains or seat reservations. Be sure to validate your tickets before boarding as this is required and you will be fined on the spot if caught without. Donna

Thanks Frank and Donna. That's very helpful. I won't agonize over not having tickets in hand before arriving in Italy. Shar
