I am making my way through cancelling my trip for Italy that would have started May 22. I have fast train reservations that I made for my family. It is three separate train trips. I fortunately was going to purchase the regional train tickets after we arrived in Italy.
I bought the tickets through the Trenitalia website (I registered) which is now allowing for a voucher good for a year for fast trains. I would prefer to get my money back. I have read on this site about some people getting refunds to their credit card.
So some questions.
We obviously aren't going but I have received no notice of the trains being cancelled. I don't know if they will be, given that Italy is starting to open up. We have tickets from Milan to Florence, Perugia to Venice, Verona to Milan for six. Will I receive notice if they are (they have my email) and will that even matter to getting a refund as opposed to a voucher?
Does anyone know how the year is being counted that the voucher is supposed to be good for? I would guess it might be clearer on Italian site but I can't read Italian. Is it a year from when the tickets were to be used, when they were purchased, or the date you request the voucher?
Obviously, they want to give out vouchers. If you read many airline websites that appears to be the only option but it isn't. If you call, you can get a refund (I have called four different airlines and have managed to get refunds from all). Is that true for Trenitalia? Does anyone have any experience with calling. Of course, I don't speak Italian which makes it more difficult than calling British Airways.
Thanks for any help. It is so much more fun to make reservations than to undo them.
