Trenitalia question - Rome to Orvieto

I am looking to book some train tickets for a day trip from Rome to Orvieto in February.

The Trenitalia website doesn't give me the option to select seats for either leg of the journey. Do this mean that it's simply first come, first served? Or are all of the seats sold out, and we would risk having to stand for the whole journey?

I also noticed that compared to going to Naples, the cost of the tickets seems to be the same whether I book a few weeks in advance or a few days in advance. Am I correct in this observation?

Thanks!

The train you will be using is a REGIONALE, which is basically a commuter train.
They work like commuter trains (or subway trains) in America. Seats are on a first come first served basis, and if there are no seats you ride the train standing up (that won't happen unless you go to Orvieto in the evening after work hours when people commute back home from Rome).
No need to buy tickets in advance. Regionali trains are very cheap and they offer no discounts for advance purchase.
Purchase when you are there at the station or even on the trenitalia app.
Be aware that if you purchase a paper ticket at the station (kiosk or office) you must validate (date stamp) the ticket at the machine next to the track before boarding. There is no need for that if you purchase via app. In that case the ticket is automatically validated.

Took us 70 minutes to get into Termini from Orvieto.

We seldom pre-purchase train tickets as our itineraries are a work in progress. If I am walking by the train station the day before, I might drop in and buy the tickets--to minimize hassle of when the train leaves.

Orvieto is a great small hilltown--located on the main highway going north toward Florence.

When we took the train from Rome, the track for the Orvieto train was tucked all the way in the back to the left (east?)....

Maybe it was called Track 1E? definitely a letter and a number Vs just a number like Track 1 or track 2?

Maybe someone can weigh in here and jog my memory. I was warned in advance and this was hugely helpful. We were waiting at the low end of the track numbers when it was announced and really had to "step lively" to get there before the doors closed. It was a hike.

Otherwise, the journey was dead easy. Orvieto was our favorite spot on the trip. Have fun!
