Trenitalia Question

How can I tell if I can get on an earlier train than purchased? We are currently in Rome and have tickets back to Florence tonight at 8:50 PM. We would like to get on an earlier train if possible thank you

Depends on the type of ticket. If it's super-economy, you will need to buy a new (base fare) ticket. If it's an economy ticket, you can pay the difference and exchange it for a base fare ticket. If it's a base fare ticket, you can exchange it at no cost.

You cannot just hop on an earlier train, since all fast trains have seat reservations and there are big fines for riding without a valid ticket.

If your ticket is a regionale (doubtful on that route), you can take an earlier train but be sure to validate your ticket before you board (unless it was purchased online, if so it is pre-validated).

I assume you're travelling on a Freccia train. It depends on the fare you paid: Base, Economy or SuperEconomy.

Base is the most expensive and the less restricted fare, you can change tickets at the counter for free up to one hour after the departure of the booked train.

SuperEconomy tickets are strictly "no changes, no refunds".

Click on the info for each of the three ticketing tier types (base/economy/super economy) for details on whether yours can be changed for free, changed with additional fee, or cannot be changed at all so will require a new purchase.
