Trenitalia: Pompei to Salerno

The trains that stop at Pompei (new town) and Salerno are all regional trains that never sell out, so there's no need to book online. Buy a ticket for the next train when you get to the station. Or, because the ticket won't be for a specific regional train, you can also buy your ticket earlier and use it for any regional train from Pompei to Salerno. Just be sure to validate the ticket at the yellow box before boarding.

Just a note: the yellow validation boxes are being replaced (slowly) by a sleeker-looking version in blue/green and grey, but they are mounted in the same places. Also, regionale train tickets are usually good for a specific time period (sometimes 30 days or so), you can use them any time during that period but remember to validate before boarding.

Lee, please note that there are two train stations in Pompei. The one at the ruins is the Pompei-Scavi stop on the Circumvesuviana train which is not Trenitalia. The other is the Trenitalia Pompei stop about a couple of kilomenters from the ruins. As mentioned above, the trains going from the Trenitalia Pompei station to Salerno are Regionale trains. You cannot buy these tickets online more than 7 days out the date you are online. Not to worry. These trains cannot be sold out. However, they can fill to the point where passengers are hanging out the doors. This last description will not happen on these trains. It might happen in the CT during the busy season but not on these runs. You'll be fine.
