I purchased 3 trenitalia tickets in advance on line. Anybody knows is that all I need to show to the train people ( the printed version with the PNR code on them) or do I need to go to the ticket window first for some kind of conversion for real hard tickets. Thanks in advance.

You are ok to go. Some rail companies require you to have the credit card that you used to purchase the tickets on you as verification. I do not know if Italian rail does or not. Since these tickets are forna specific train and date, do not and cannot be validated in the yellow boxes.

We just showed the conductor our cell phone with the PRN number. A few times he asked us to read out the number, but we didn't even have the print outs or tickets and we were fine.

I bought some tickets while in Rome this summer and didn't have a printer available. I showed the conductor the handwritten number on a piece of paper and it was fine.
