Trenitalia now accepting Paypal

Today on the Trenitalia website, they are "testing" some new options, including payment through Paypal. After trying several times to have a credit card payment accepted and failing (despite being registered on the Trenitalia site), I used the paypal option and had success! Also, as of today, some of the summer fares are posted, including some really low mini fares.

I just purchased tickets for Rome-Verona on July 12th (about 110 days from now ?!?) for a decent mini fare of 19euro each. I had no problem using my US-based Mastercard. I love using Paypal as an alternative to sending expensive wire transfers for apartment rentals, but Paypal does use a fairly poor currency exchange rate amounting to something like a 5% or so penalty - more than my credit card, so I chose to use that instead. I'm all in favor of Paypal getting more widespread though. It has some tremendous potential advantages for many people.

I agree about the disadvantages of paypal, but was frustrated with the credit card rejection! Got a great fare from Florence to Naples for late June -- 19 euros.

I tried to buy train tix from Venice to La Spezia this am using Trenitalia.com. All went well until the end of the transaction; I was told to try again later. I was using my Visa Capital-One card. There were so many seats available in first class for the train I wanted, I think I will just wait until I reach Venice before buying my tix.

mini fares start from 9€, so if you are flexible with your travel dates/hours, you can pay just 9€ on all highspeed connections between ROMA-MILANO, TORINO-NAPOLI (which goes through milan usually, so even MILAN-NAPLES), ROMA-BARI, FIRENZE-ROMA, ROMA-VENEZIA (stops in FIRENZE too), ROMA-REGGIO C.,

Yes those mini fares are a huge $ saver. Our group of 16 is traveling Rome -> Venice in June. I had budgeted around 1500 Euros from our group for this trip. Imagine my surprise when I bought 16 tickets for 144Euro...TOTAL!
