Trenitalia Mobile Phone Ticket

Hello all,

I did not see this topic answered anywhere so here goes...
I know Rick always says you must get your ticket validated before boarding the trains in Italy, however, how does this work when using the Trenitalia app? We are headed over next month and want to be prepared and avoid any fines. Thank you for any help!

Just download the ticket pdf to your phone or tablet and you're good to go - no validation required. If asked, just show the QR code for them to scan.

If you were using an iPhone, you could add add the ticket to Apple Wallet after you received your confirmation.

You'll receive your ticket as an attachment to a confirmatory email you'll receive once the electronic booking is complete - no validation required, Just show that to the ticket checker on the train when he comes thru the compartment. He has a portable reader that will register your code.
Might add that at the larger stations you'll need to show your electronic ticket to pass security and access the platform. In our case (at SMN in Florence) the guards barely looked at it and just waived us thru when I held it up.

You only need to purchase a ticket that does not have an assigned date/time. If you have a ticket purchased for a specific train (i.e. Florence to Rome on June 3 at 10:40), then that ticket can only be used on that train, so you don't also need to validate it in a machine. When you purchase your tickets on Trenitalia for a specific train, you'll just show the conductor your QR code.
