I will be taking the train from Rome Termini Station to Camuccia-Cortona on Sept 5 but it does not yet appear that Trenitalia has tickets available yet for the Fecciarosa High Speed train yet except for one on the following day. My trip is only 88 days away. Is this normal?
Using Frecciarosso trains actually takes longer than using IC and regional trains, You have to go to Florence, then back track. I see a direct regional train at 8:20 am that takes 3 hours, 1/2 hour less time than going by Freccia, and it is only 15.60 EUR. Always the same price, so you can wait until departure day to buy a ticket.
But as to the reason, there is an ongoing construction project in Florence. some Saturdays are blocked in the schedule until they have more precise information on the construction progress.
That is very kind of you to reply - thank you. We will need to leave about 1:30 PM and I like to travel in Executive class on Fecciarosa. Just seems wierd becasue we're in the less than 90 day window and still no options.
See my edit, but even with trains running normal, I don't see any departure with Freccia trains after 12:10 pm. So if you want to leave after 1:30 pm, you need to take regional trains.
- there is no "90 days window". It's "up to 180 days", but when the day of the seasonal timetable change gets closer some Regional trains may not yet appear on the system.
- the next timetable change is, as always, on the second Sunday in June. In 2026 it falls on the 14th.
Since you are going to take a Freccia going north and then a Regionale train backtracking south, Wait for the 15th and check again. But you must pick an early time of departure from the drop-down menu. Otherwise the site defaults to the time on your system.
On the 4th of September engineering works will take place in Florence. If you see a barred cart on trenitalia.com and a warning that reads: "Currently not available for purchase We are rescheduling travel solutions" it means just that: you have to wait. They don't expect people to check the schedules so early and they block bookings the day after the works.
Sam is right. The route via Florence takes around 3 hours and 1 change. Any day there are 5 direct Regionales that go from Roma Termini to Camucia-Cortona in 3 hours. To enjoy the executive class for 1 hour and half, You are basically paying more to arrive later.
I will just add that currently, the first Frecciarosso after 1:30 pm is at 3:10 pm, the connection from Florence to Camuccia-Cortona is then a regionale veloce taking 1 hour and 9 minutes and is all 2nd class. So while you may enjoy Executive class for 1 1/2 hours from Rome to Florence, you still have to rub shoulders with the hoi polloi on a regional train to get to Camuccia-Cortona.
I am guessing that the reason you must travel after 1:30 pm, is that you are arriving by airplane at Fiumicino the same day. If that is the case, I'd just take the first available connection from Fiumicino after you have your luggage, and if that is by regional train, so be it.
Thank you all, this was very helpful.
