Trenitalia for Canadians

Hi all, Apparently Canadians are locked out of the Trenitalia app. My question is what would be the difference if I schedule our journey through Trenitalia's website vs the app or should I just use the third party Trainline. We're traveling to Florence, Monterosso, Sorrento and Rome September 16 to Oct 9. Thanks in advance.

I think the Trenit app is available for Canadians

There would be no difference whether you book on app or website
The app is just handy to have while traveling

I don’t use 3rd party sites -no advice

Your journey to Sorrento will include a leg on the Circumvesuviana from Naples-local commuter train- can’t be booked online anywhere
( cant sell out, no change in price ever)

I use the Trenitalia website and find it works well. If you are buying multiple tickets you may want to create an account to track your trips. But whether or not you create an account, you can download your tix to your phone and access them easily even if no cell service. Have a great trip!

Ashaw I get the same notification that the Trenitalia app isn't available from a Canadian location. I've always used the website for previous travels, and printed the tickets at home. No doubt now I'd just save them to a folder on my phone. You may find that you can download the app once you arrive in Italy.

If you have an IPad, the Trenìt app is available in Canada.
It just doesn’t work on phones, but it will once you get to Italy.

Be sure to look also at Italo for Italian trains….they run high speed ones, sometimes at better prices.

ashaw,

For the trip from Naples to Sorrento, you can use the Circumvesuviana or the Campania Express - https://www.sorrentoinsider.com/en/campania-express-train-schedule .

The Trenit app is available on the Canadian app store, and can be used for not only Trenitalia but also Italo, Trenord and others. I tend to use TrainLine as that covers many other rail networks in Europe as well (one stop shopping for a multi-country trip).

With Regionale tickets, I find it just as easy to buy locally from a Kiosk as there's no discount for advance purchase. With locally purchased paper tickets, it's important to validate the ticket prior to boarding the train on the day of travel.

You don't need the app, the website works just as well. I live in Italy and have never downloaded the app.

Hi, I love in the US so don’t have your specific issue. For the more expensive tickets, I buy those a few months ahead through the Trenitalia website and print out a copy. I also save a screenshot photo of both the ticket & the enlarged QR code in my iCloud folders - “2025 May Italy tickets” was the most recent one.

At Italy, I buy the remaining ones when I need one through their handy Trenitalia app. You could do the same. For instance, when I am almost at the turnstile for the Leonardo Express from Rome’s airport into Roma Termini, I just step over to the wall, pull up the app and buy it - very quick because I do have my info & cc loaded into it already. There were some long lines at some cities’ ticket machine kiosks that I was able to whisk past.

Thanks MR.
Can I follow the stops on the website to know when to get off?
This trip is the first for train travel for us in Italy so my next question may be silly, but here goes is 15 minutes enough time to change trains from the Leonardo Express in Rome Termini to the connection to Firenze SMN?

I'm not sure if that function is available with the website. But if you have data on your phone, and input your train info into Google Maps, it should indicate all the intermediate stops and your progress. We didn't use this in Italy, but it worked for us in Scotland last fall.

Yes, just type in your train number then you can follow the stops using the app. It also shows the estimated arrival time at each stop.

Once you are in Italy, the app is invaluable for train info. On our recent trip, one train was very delayed but the app showed which platform at Roma Termini we needed to change to. Mad dash, but we probably would have not made the connection.

Also, if you are flying into FCO, I would not purchase train tickets in advance. Delays, cancellations, lots of flights arriving at the same time. Once you arrive and are ready to take the Leonardo Express, purchase your tickets at FCO.

On an Android, you can sideload an APK file of it quite easily and it works perfectly.

Hello Warren from Kelowna
Can you explain sideload and what is an APK file.

Sideloading APKs is a pretty unsafe thing to do unless you're really knowledgeable about cybersecurity and know how to protect yourself against the risks.

Yes I read a little about it and that is definitely not for me. Thanks
