Trenitalia fined for Anti-Trust for deceiving practices.
Basically the software used in the Trenitalia website, App, and automatic kiosks, purposedly hides the more economical solutions (e.g. regional trains or intercity solutions) and shows instead the more expensive Freccia solutions, even when other cheaper solutions exist which may be just a bit slower.
If you are not in a hurry, try and click on the Regionali only button, to see only regionali options come up.

Next thing they can go after are the service people at Rome's Fiumicino airport, who are much more concerned about their clothing, preening and socializing with each other rather than doing their real job of helping travelers.
