Trenitalia app registration

Hi Everyone—

In preparation for my first trip to Italy in March, I thought I’d check out the Trenitalia app and register so I’d be all set to purchase my train tickets.

In both the app and the website, I can’t find the United States from the drop-down menu and this is a required field for registering. What am I missing?

I know registering is not necessary, but won’t this save me the time of having to re-enter all my info. each time I make a purchase?

Thanks,
Carrie

Thanks Dario!!! I was in the English versions of the app and website and didn’t realize the country names were not in English. In looking under the S instead of the U, I do indeed see Stati Uniti D’America. 😊

Thanks again.

Carrie, I don't know your age, but there is a way to get a senior discount card from Trenitalia in advance as a non resident. It has been taking awhile, but since your trip is in March, you have time. If interested PM me.

Carol, I appreciate the information. I have not reached senior status quite yet, but I get a little closer each day. 😊

I was a little skeptical about the Trenitalia app but after using it I would consider it a must.
- Live updates on trains you're waiting for
- Platform information for departing trains - especially handy for quick transfers
- Buy tickets on the fly for trains that are at the station without waiting in line for the ticket machines

If you're using trains in Italy I highly recommend it!

Another tip - I mostly only used it in Florence and Verona but Google Maps > Directions (Mass Transit) did a really good job of plotting bus routes and identifying stops and schedules.

Have a great trip,

The app is really good especially if you’re using Regionale trains for most travel, so yes, registering is a time saver. You can book the day before or even day of to coincide with when you want to travel and then not have it on your phone so you don’t need to cancel an actual paper ticket before boarding. Good to know that you can reserve on a Regionale for a specific train, but can then travel on any other Regionale or RV train within the next four hours because you are traveling without a seat reservation. No IC (Intercity) or Freccia trains!
Carol mentioned the Freccia card. It’s only use for getting a discount is for the Freccia trains which are all reserved. Our experience was reserving well in advance and getting very good fare prices that were better than with the card, so do your research on that to see if it’s worth applying for. We knew exactly which train we wanted when, so helped immensely. If your plans are more fluid, that won’t work as well for you. Also, shorter trips are far less expensive on the Regionale than Freccia if they run the same route. We were fine taking an additional amount of time to save quite a bit. Our Frecciarossa rides were longer trips and ones when we needed a speedier arrival.

Any Trenitalia train ticket can be purchased via any sales channel up to 15 minutes before the scheduled departure time.
The app is great for knowing in advance the intended departure/arrival tracks.

I have never checked because they run only High speed trains, but I think Italotreno has the same 15 minutes rule.

I followed Carol's Senior card instructions to the letter. Submitted in Mid August still waiting for a response. In the meantime we had a great trip....I'm not getting any younger.

SJS and Dario, I appreciate the additional information.

Brad, perhaps I should apply for the discount now. Maybe I’ll get it in 11 years when I’ll be qualified to use it. 😊

Artificial Intelligence, Switzerland was a great first country to visit, but I do fear it has spoiled me for other countries.

Caribchakita, the train apps are useful for checking to see if the trains are on time and which platform the train will be. Also, you can follow along and see which stops are before yours. So, I would recommend installing the app before you go and becoming familiar with it.
