Trenitalia App (how to for a Canadian)

Hi

I've read my posts about the convenient & ease of the Trenitalia app for purchasing train tickets but I'm not able to download the app in Canada. Is that even possible? What am I doing wrong?

Also I read from Seat61 site that "if you buy online it's [Ordinaria; regular fare for regional trains] only valid for 4 hours from the time of the train you book. Online regional tickets are non-refundable." (Source: https://www.seat61.com/train-travel-in-italy.htm#how-to-use-trenitalia.com under "Types of fare, Ordinaria")

  • In this case, "online" means from the Trenitalia website and not the app, right?
  • Also if one buys a regional ticket on the app but missed the schedule train, would I need to pay to buy another ticket for the next regional train?

Last question: From this web page https://www.trenitalia.com/en/purchase/mobile_ticketing_duplicatedContent.html it says "*To buy with the Trenitalia App, you must be registered on this site."
Though this other web page https://www.trenitalia.com/en/purchase/mobile_ticketing.html didn't mention anything about registering on the web site. Can anyone share their experience?

Thank you

I did a brief check and wasn't able to find the Trenitalia app on the Canadian app store. I'm assuming that it may not be available here?

You might consider downloading the Trainline app, as that will allow you to buy tickets for both high speed rail networks in Italy as well as many others across Europe - https://apps.apple.com/ca/app/trainline-buy-train-tickets/id334235181 . I believe they now charge a small service fee, but it's quite reasonable and I've never found that to be a problem. You'll need to register on the site and provide payment details, but once that's done it's very user friendly. I've found their customer service to be very responsive (hopefully that hasn't changed).

You can download the app. “ Trenìt!! Find Trains in Italy.”
I’m in Canada and have it on my IPad and Android phone.
I don’t buy anything thru my mobile devices, but it looks like you can buy Italo and Trenitalia tickets with it.
It’s a great app for schedules , prices, planning.
I buy my tickets before I leave home, if they are ones that I can save money on by buying in advance.
Just sign up (for free ) on the Italo and Trenitalia websites.
Otherwise, just use the machines at the Italian rail stations, or at the ticket counters if the lineup is short.

No, because Regional trains tickets are

valid for 4 hours from the time of the train you book

You can get all train tickets up to 15 minutes before the scheduled departure time, either online or at the counter. Since the regionale trains' fares are fixed and these trains can't sell out, there is no risk for latecomers. No risks other than a long line at the counter or a dead phone.

Register to trenitalia.com and get all the tickets you need. As a registered user you can easily manage your tickets without hassle.
Save locally the PNR and the QR codes of all your tickets on your phone, or print them out.

Do not forget the username and password you used.

Once in Italy, connect to the airport wi-fi, download the app and log in using the same username and password.

The app is indispensable to receive live notifications about departure tracks and delays, as long as you have internet connection. Not to purchase tickets and check schedules and fares.

I can confirm that the Trenitalia app is not available from the Canadian Apple App Store. I've been trying for 3 years. (I live in Italy but I have not switched to the Italian App Store so I can maintain my Canadian apps.) Frustratingly, it is available in the U.S. App Store but not Canada.

I buy directly from the Trenitalia website. It works fine, though the app would be easier for showing tickets on board and checking timetable changes.

Trainline is often recommended, I haven't tried it as I prefer to buy directly.

Trenit! app is a bit spotty in my experience in terms of schedule updates and availaibility but it works most of the time.

EDIT: you will not be able to download the app from Italian wi-fi unless you change your App Store affiliation. Which is a pain and may cause you to lose access to some of your Canadian apps

Thank you everyone for all your replies, input, tips.

@Nelly good to know that if I try to download the app in Italy I'll lose some of my Canadian apps.
Now what if I'm going to get a local Italian sim card, would I still lose some of my Canadian apps? With the local sim card, I'll have a local Italian tel # & data.

I know I can purchase tickets on Trainline, Raileurope, Italiarail etc (seat61 even mentioned that Italiarail will refund the booking fee if you email a special email for that.)

I've read others in the forum (probably non-Canadian) saying that with a long line up or train coming in 5 min, he/she was able to purchase the train tickets using the Trenitalia app on the platform.

Since I can't download the app as a Canadian, then I guess I'll have to use the ticket machine or the counter (if the line up is low). Perhaps I will group my purchases for a few trips so no need to line up everyday.

I doubt it was actually 5 minutes, but anyway if you have internet access you can do the same via Trenitalia's mobile site. There is no difference in what you can do and when, people prefers the app because of the notifications.
