I have attempted tp buy tickets on TrenItalia's website with no luck. I Keep getting denined. Does anyone know the definitive answer - can I buy TrenItalia tickets after I arrive in room at a train station with my US credit card Yes - I've told the card compamny I'll be in Italy) or will it also be denied? Any help would be great!
TrenItalia's website blocks all US credit cards...there's no way around it. But you shouldn't have any problems once you arrive in Italy:
Thanks Michael.
Since buying through trenitalia's website is impossible you can easily buy them in Italy. Some people like to have tkts in hand prior to leaving the U.S. and purchase through raileurope.com. DON'T do this as you will pay LOTS more! Just buy them when you get to Italy. Buon Viaggio!
Dan we had the same concern before we went to Italy (Sept 09). We waited until we arrived and it was extremely easy. Machines are everywhere in the train stations and you buy them a lot cheaper there.
Great job Ron!! Your info. was very useful on our trip this past July. Thank You!!
Hey Ron,
Good to see you posting again. As always, your info is spot on!

About a week ago someone on the Lonely Planet forum said they got it to work on their second try - buying on-line from Trenitalia - with a U.S. credit card. I don't know though -
Last week coming back from Rome I missed a train trying to buy at the ticket machine with my Amex - I had to use a Visa - which worked, got the ticket, ran to the platform, and the train was leaving - 1 minute early according to the station clocks! Several other people were cursing and shouting the train as it left...
Trying the Amex first cost me an hour and half -
Was able to use my Amex at the window in Florence though... Italy!
