Trenitalia and children's fare

I am looking at the Trenitalia site and wish to purchase the "Familia 20%" discount fare. I see the child has to be under 12 to qualify for the discount. Our child is 12. Dumb question: do they mean 12 and under or do you think she is too old to qualify for the family discount? (As I look further under "Offers and Deals", it says the child must be between 6 and 15. What gives?)

It clearly states children under 12. Offer for journeys by family groups made up of from 2 to 5 persons of whom at least 1 is an adult and 1 is a child of less than 12; this exciting solution includes the free place booking: 50% (30% for couchettes and Wagon Lit) for children under 12; 20% for the other persons. I believe the offer for children between 6 and 15 is for international travel only. The offer is valid on all trains connecting Italy with Austria and on the night trains to Germany With the Family Special offer children over 6 and under 15 who travel with an adult (not necessarily the parent) - holding an Adult or Card fare ticket - pay: * 7 euro per 2nd class seat on the trains to Austria
* 9 euro for 2nd class seats on the night trains to Germany So if you are visiting two or more countries you can use that discount, if not, you'll need to use the mini fares since your daughter is too old for the family fare. With the mini fare you can save up to 60% but be sure of your travel dates as they are very strict about changes and refunds. Donna

Yes, that's what I had thought, but thank you for confirming this, Donna!
