Trenitalia (and Air) News: More high speed “Frecce” service directly from Fiumicino airport.

Starting this month of December, in time for the Christmas holidays) Trenitalia will start additional Freccia service from Fiumicino.

  • Rome Fiumicino - Genova, and viceversa, (via Roma T., Firenze Campo Marte, Pisa, La Spezia). This option will make it easier to head to the Cinque Terre directly from the airport.

The current service Fiumicino to (and from) Venice will continue but will be upgraded and will be using the faster Frecciarossa.

New early morning train from Florence to Rome departing at 6am. This new option will permit some to spend the night in Florence before a morning flight from Rome Fiumicino.

Puglia is also closer. New Frecciarossa service has been upgraded and Bari can now be reached in 3h30min from Rome.

Finally Alitalia news: it appears that the Ferrovie dello Stato Group (owner of Trenitalia) will be the majority stakeholder in Alitalia, along with some equity funds and bank groups. Alitalia will continue to be a partner of Delta, and Delta might actually be a minority shareholder. With the common ownership of Trenitalia and Alitalia, expect more integration between train and air travel from the Fiumicino hub.

Roberto,

This is good news! Things are improving all the time.

"This option will make it easier to head to the Cinque Terre directly from the airport."

That will certainly help the overcrowding problem.
