Trek to top of Duomo

We will be spending a week in Florence. We have been there before, it was our first trip to Europe, we were a bit wonderstruck, to say the least. This time, we intend to absorb it better. My husband insists he is going to the top of the Duomo. I feel confident he will have no problem with this, as he is a cyclist for 35 years. I'd like also, to try it. I am not a cyclist, but am in good shape. I'm a little woman and I walk my 10,000 steps a day +. We have no problem walking 10 -15 miles a day while on trips. All this leads up to the question.... Should I attempt it?? I know I would have to take breaks, as I saw that it is 400 something steps but if one makes it to the top, the views are incredible. BTW, He is 61, I am 64. I want opinions from those that have done this. Thanks

If you can walk 10 miles a day, barring any specific issue (knees, asthma...) you certainly can climb 400-500 steps. I don't remember the steps being particularly nasty, and you're looking at about 300 vertical feet, which is not that much for anyone reasonably fit.

Thanks! Luckily, I do not have any chronic health issues nor orthopaedic problems. I think I will give it a go!

Christy, I haven't done it but there are a few of youtube videos out there that people recorded of their climbs. At least you could get a look at what to expect?

Here's one for starters (parts are a bit hard to see 'cause it's sort of dark in there):

Thanks, Kathy.... I am slightly concerned about claustrophobia.

Go for it! My husband and I were 62 and 58 when we climbed to the top; like you, we do a lot of walking when we are at home. It's a lot of steps but really isn't that bad :). On your way up (and down, if I recall correctly) you get to stop and look at the interior of the Duomo. Once you make it to the top you will be glad you made the climb! Also consider the time of year you are traveling and how warm it will be when you make your reservation.

By the way--if you have not visited the Duomo museum, be sure to spend some time there. The original doors to the Baptistry, as well as many original statues and other artifacts, are beautifully displayed there.

We climbed back in June. The climb was just a bit easier than I expected. It was worth it. My main tip is to book tickets in advance. When we were there the climb tickets were sold out for the next 3 days.
