Travestere for 25th Dec dining

Hi,

Would there be any restaurant open in Travestere on 25th Dec or is it better to stick w/ Jewish Ghetto area for dining on that day?

If there's any would open in Travestere, please recommend the restaurant.

Thanks

Hi Kathy,

Yes I've visited Katie Parla's web and the restaurant Laurel also advised in Jewish Ghetto but still considering which of the 2 areas, Travestere or Jewish Ghetto better to dine on Xmas day. I know that the Jewish Ghetto is going to be lively during Xmas day but if we could change venue between dinner and lunch, it might be good too for change in atmosphere.

If there's any would open in Travestere, please recommend the
restaurant.

Katie's website provided two recommendations. I don't know as it's a matter of one neighborhood over another being 'better' as much as which restaurant appeals, and whether they still have tables open for reservation at this point.

Hi Kathy,

i'm still open to any other suggestions as the restaurants are either out of my budget or it's on budget but far away from places i'm going to visit that day. also most of the recommendations opens on 24th but only very few still opens on the 25th.

Jen,
Just walk around, find a restaurant that looks appealing and explore.

jkc - One really has to make reservations for Christmas Eve & Day in Roma. Those who do not often end up standing in the street for a long time waiting for an opening.

Jen - Italians usually have a big Christmas lunch (Pranzo di Natale) around 14:00 and not both a traditional lunch and supper. That way you can combine your budget for two meals and have one more expensive one, perhaps?

Both of the Trastevere reco's on Katie's site are noted as open on Christmas Day. She also notes 2 in the Ghetto which are open Christmas Day.

Some other ideas around the city; possibly Laurel or some of the others can weigh in on them:

I see that Crispi 19 and Flavio Velavevodetto (listed in the site above) were recommended by other RS members:

Hi Laurel & Kathy,

thanks so much for the recommendations. I forward them to my hubby. He's the one who's going to decide. When I provide him with the blog and website recommended, he came back to me and sighed they're so expensive, any other hun? :D I told him to stick with Travestere and Jewish Ghetto area which are quite touristy, hence the higher price.

and good idea for the 2pm lunch. it coincidentally works better with my itinerary too :)
EDIT: Laurel, is this 2pm Pranzo di Natale menu offer a different menu than the normal lunch hour 12pm time?
And I read your experience dining the "7fishes" traditional menu near Piazza Navona. That sounds interesting and the first time i heard about the 7fishes menu. My family is crazy about fish so I think this would be interesting to them. is it more like a degustation menu size? the 45EUR is for the whole meal? would it be available on the 25th or it's a special menu just for Christmas Eve?

also, any place for sips of coffee or tea would open on the 25th? McDonald's is quite far from where we'd be during late afternoon. I plan to spend later afternoon in Jewish Ghetto and Trasvetere area after lunch.

Jen, Italians eat lunch late every day, usually starting about 13:00 on a business day. 14:00 is more normal for Sunday and holidays. The seafood dinner at Antica Taverna is only Christmas Eve, but I think the are open Christmas Day. The Ghetto and Trastevere are not necessarily more expensive. It' s a major holiday so prices are up. (You should see how bad the are in London where we will be!) Some restaurants serve off the regular menu, rather than a fixed price meal.

Hi Laurel,

thanks for clarifying that. now my hubby gives me 5 options. btw after i got the link from Kathy about your recommendation near Piazza Navona, i thought why didn't i think of that area and surrounding since we're going to head for Christmas Market afterwards. it makes him easier to browse too.
1. http://www.baccanoroma.com/
Via delle Muratte, 23. Tel: 06 6994 1166
2. Trattoria Moderna
Vicolo dei Chiodaroli (Campo dei Fiori)
3. il Falchetto
Via dei Montecatini, 12 (Trevi Fountain)
4. il Corallo
Via del Corallo 11 (Piazza Navona).
5. www.ilgiardinoromano.it (Jewish Ghetto)
i plan to have lunch in Jewish Ghetto and most likely to book one that Laurel has recommended but haven't decided on the dinner one. i think i scrap off the Trevi Fountain's one of the list. Anyone has had meal in these venues could share perhaps?

Cheers

Jen you will have to decide soon. These places book up and there is every possibility that if you don't get your reservations in soon your decisions will be made for you because you will be left with the one that is not yet full. Seriously.

Time is short. Christmas is a special time of the year in Rome and the locals will be in the restaurants.

Even now you may find that some or all of the places on your list are full.

We were in Rome this past May for 5 nights, and ate at Trattoria Moderna 2 times. It was recommended by our hotel and is close to Plaza Navona. We found it to be reasonably priced, the food was delicious, and they were very accommodating.

We have eaten at Il Giardino Romana on both Christmas Day and Easter Sunday. They were very well organized, accommodating for those who had reservations, and served good Roman food from an ala carte menu. Prices were normal, i.e., they did not increase them for the holiday. Do reserve by the middle of the month.

Hi All,

since Nigel's reminder , I hurried my husband up :D

we have booked and got confirmation for Trattoria for dinner and Il Giardino for lunch. Il Giardino doesn't increase their price woww. are the other restaurants in the Jewish Ghetto do the same Laurel since they don't celebrate Christmas?

thanks for all the restaurants recommendations. it's a pity by the time i just booked the restaurant, i read Laurel's post that Piazza Navona's Christmas Market gets cancelled (I still hope w/ my mum's luck perhaps they'd have a change of heart hahah).
