I am visiting Italy for the first time with my family including my 3 teenage/preteen children. We are in Rome for 3 nights and I am wondering staying in Traverse or Monti is better. I hear the atmosphere in Traverse is better but wondering if the proximity of Monti si more important? Is Monti loud at night?

It's Trastevere, not Traverse, and it is louder at night than Monti as it's full of restaurants and popular with young people. Monti is close to the Colosseum but not much else, so if you stay in Trastevere you will be nearer to many of the sights such as the Pantheon and Piazza Navona. It is on the other side of the river Tiber but considered part of the Centro Storico.

The area you mean is Trastevere. Either is a good choice with good walkability and transportation options. Look for lodging you like and check reviews regarding noise levels.
