Hope everyone has a great time. When my son was 12 he got up in the morning with us and went to bed with us. As he got older he and friends stayed out later and didn't want to get up. Hard time catching the trains. Have him read up on the places you plan to visit. All of you discuss possilbe things to do.
Be prepaided for him to tast the wine with dinner. Rome will keep you busy with all the sights. Trastevere area is a great walking area that you can shop and then have dinner, he should have fun walking here. Venice has enough to keep you busy, just walk and shop and eat. Tuscany is fantastic but he could get bored and this is where the wine comes in. Remember you may not have the same interests and it would be good to get his ideas. He may be happy getting comic books written in italian.

I agree with Dean. Our teen daughters loved the evenings to people watch, have a gelato and sometimes see street entertainers. They are not late sleepers but we saved the really early mornings for travel days or special events. We kept it to one museum a day and not too much time in churches. Ruins and beaches are a hit. Sometimes ours preferred alone time with their music or magazines which was good for train rides or seating on a wall. It didn't mean they were mad or bored. A high point in one city was going into each bakery/store and trying a different treat. Italy is the best party in town- you'll all have a wonderful time!

Nancy,
We are in Tuscany right now and have been on a similar trip with our 12 and 15 year old boys. Their favorites so far have been the market (until 2:00 p.m.) at Campo dei Fiori and they loved Piazza Navonna and the street performers. Evenings at Campo dei Fiori. They have loved any outdoor place to eat. In CT we stayed in Manarola, which we all loved, but they really liked the beach at Monterosso.

They are also looking forward to the Torture Museum at San Gimignano....

Hope that helps and have a great timee!
