We are a large group of 16 adults and 16, 10-12 yr old hockey players from Canada travelling by bus through Europe at the end of March. We have two days in Venice. Where should we stay to maximize our ability to move around easily and have an old world type of experience? Thank You,
Marian
So you're leaving in two months and you need lodging for 32?
I realize it may be late, that is why I am asking for suggestions. Cheers
Wow! Good luck with that! You may need to find several locations, hopefully near each other, and break your group up.
Staying anywhere in Venice (and not on the mainland and not in Mestre) will probably give you an old-world type of experience. Venice is relatively small, so pretty much any place in Venice would allow to you move around easily. But I would suggest looking in the sestieres (roughly, neighborhoods) of San Marco or the portions of Castello, Dordoduro or Cannaregio that are nearest San Marco. And obviously, you'll have to have somewhere to park the bus. I have no idea whether the main parking lot, Tronchetto, can accommodate buses.
We've stayed in Venice with a large group of college students on three different occasions in the fall "off" season. We always managed to stay near the center of the city but we booked our hotel 6-9 months in advance to find accommodations in the same smallish hotel. We emailed a lot of hotels whose capacity fit our population. You'll need to specify the number of doubles, triples and quads that you need depending on your group. You'll also need to be up front with them about the age of the students in your group. Good luck.
The best strategy for you, this close to your trip date, is: - check how many doubles and triples do you need (don't count on quads) - check hotel websites and see their location on Google Maps, discard those who clearly cater for couples and/or are too small to accommodate your travel group - write them with objective information, but leave them some leeway (like shuffling doubles and triples) - if you can't accommodate everyone in one place, try to split the group in 3 or 4 hotels that are close by.
There is a semi-hostel/guest house that fits larger groups near the train station called Al Gerotto Calderon and quite a few hostel like places. If there is a bus involved, leave that in Mestre and have the group take the 10min train ride for 1.10 EUR to get to Venice. Otherwise parking can be a nightmare in Venice since the parking lots are expensive. Venice for Rookies city guide has a bunch of hand picked restaurants and a self-guided legends tour which can be of interest to that young group as well as educational.
